OLYMPIA…Sen.
Linda Evans Parlette, R-Wenatchee, has introduced a bill
that would allow the Washington State Patrol to name
chronically ill children “chief for a day.”
Senate Bill 5582, which Parlette is sponsoring at
the request of the Washington State Patrol, would
authorize the department to partner with local law
enforcement agencies and hospitals to recognize ailing
children.
“Members of the Washington State
Patrol are leaders in our community and heroes to our
children,” Parlette said.
“I’m proud to support this legislation that would
allow acutely sick kids the chance to feel like a
million bucks for a day.”
Local law enforcement agencies from
around the state have individually hosted programs that
recognize and give honorary status to children in poor
health.
While the cost of these events is minimal, and the
primary cost is the time of the officers involved, the
State Patrol is pursuing statutory authority to
participate.
SB 5582 would permit the State
Patrol to accept grant money and other donations to
enable its “chief for a day” program and allow the
events to take place at WSP facilities.
In Parlette’s hometown of Wenatchee
local law enforcement agencies have recognized
terminally ill children during the annual Apple Blossom
Festival. The youths are given a uniform and the
opportunity to preside over the festival’s opening
ceremonies as honorary chief.
Knowing how that event has been tremendously
rewarding for everyone involved, Parlette said she was
happy to accept the WSP’s request to be the bill’s prime
sponsor.
“As a rule, I try not to stand in
the way of a good idea, especially when it comes from
someone that carries a gun,” Parlette joked.
“In all seriousness, the chief for a day program
is a simple way to make a positive difference in the
life of a young child.”
Parlette’s bill has been referred
to the
Senate Transportation Committee.
A public hearing is scheduled for Thursday, Feb.
5, at 1:30 p.m.
