Sen. Swecker statement on Alaskan Way
Viaduct design delay
December 31, 2008
OLYMPIA…Sen. Dan Swecker,
Republican leader on the Senate Transportation Committee, issued
this statement today regarding the delay on a decision to
replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct:
“I am very disappointed. The bottom line is
that the viaduct is not safe – people’s lives are at stake
should we have another earthquake.
“The current structure is scheduled to come
down in 2012. We’ve been punting on this fix since the Nisqually
Earthquake nearly eight years ago.
“Gov. Gregoire and Seattle city leaders must
make the decision for the Legislature to act.
It is long overdue.”
