Hewitt invites students to serve as Senate
pages in Olympia
December 5, 2008
OLYMPIA…Senator
Mike Hewitt today invited students from the 16th Legislative
District to participate in the Washington State Legislature’s
Page Program during the 2009 legislative session. The page
program is open to students ages 14 to 16-1/2 who have
demonstrated a high level of academic achievement and want to
see the Legislature’s workings first-hand.
“The page program is a
great way for students to learn how state government really
works,” said Hewitt, R-Walla Walla. “It’s always exciting to see
how much students change and grow in just one week. Sometimes
they come to Olympia a bit apprehensive about the experience,
but they leave with new friends and insights into our government
that will serve them well for a lifetime. It’s an honor to serve
students and parents in our district by sponsoring student
pages.”
During their week in
Olympia pages meet government officials, work in a professional
setting, meet other students and, at the same time, provide the
Legislature with an invaluable service. While at the Capitol
pages deliver messages around the campus and serve on the Senate
floor during floor sessions. They attend page school for two
hours a day where they learn about the Legislature, write and
present their own bills and role-play as legislators in a mock
committee hearing. If needed, students can get private housing
for the week through host families living in the Olympia area.
