Senate
approves Benton bill to ensure employees of organizations exempt
from the unemployment tax are aware they may not collect
benefits
March 14, 2007
OLYMPIA…The
Senate yesterday unanimously approved an employee notification
bill sponsored by Sen. Don Benton, R-Vancouver.
The measure, Substitute Senate
Bill 5702, requires employers not subject to the state
unemployment tax to post a notice in a conspicuous place to
notify employees they are not eligible for unemployment benefits
based on their employment with that organization.
“This is a simple bill about being
fair,” Benton said. “Employees in these organizations need to
know they are exempt from unemployment insurance benefits,
should they be laid off.”
SSB 5702 is now before the House
of Representatives for consideration.
