Christian School’s junior high choir, the Sun’s Choraliers, were one of two
featured groups to sing Monday in the Legislative Building Rotunda at the
Grand Re-Opening Ceremony of the state Capitol.
Senate Republican Caucus Chair Jim
Honeyford, R-Sunnyside, introduced the students. After their performance
the students toured the Capitol and had their picture taken with Sen.
Honeyford and Rep. Dan Newhouse, R-Sunnyside.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for
us,” said Al Smeenk, Sunnyside’s choral director.
“It’s great to have the kids visit the
Capitol and show them what it’s all about. Some of the parents have never
even been to the Capitol.”
As caucus chair and a member of the
Legislative Building Renovation Oversight Committee, Honeyford invited the
group to take part in the ceremony because he was impressed with their
performance and eager to share the experience with the rest of the state.
“I was proud to be able to bring the
Sun’s Choraliers to Olympia for this important occasion,” Honeyford said.
“This was a historic moment and I know it meant a lot to the students as
well.”
Jordan Vogel, an eight-grader at
Sunnyside Christian School, echoed the senator’s assessment.
“I had to get up at 3 a.m., but it was
worth it,” Vogel said. “It’s an honor and the chance of a lifetime to sing
at the Capitol.”
The Capitol Re-Opening Ceremony was open
to the public. Events included a prayer by Rev. Dale Oquist, a national
anthem soloist, and remarks by Gov. Gary Locke. Refreshments and building
tours were available throughout the day.
