What Are Podcasts and Vodcasts?

Those of you who are already familiar with these terms won’t need an explanation, but there are many of you out there who are new to this technology. This will explain what these new technologies are and what they can do for you.

A podcast is essentially an audio recording in a particular digital format that can be “collected” by a user’s computer to make it accessible to the public through a portable music device.

If you’re new to this technology, you have several options. First, you can listen to our streaming audio files, WAV or MP3, right from your computer. You don’t need an MP3 player to tune in. Note that the WAV file is much larger than the MP3, but the audio quality is also improved.

Second, if you have an MP3 player you can manually download our MP3 files and load them onto your player. That way, you can listen to whichever podcast interests you whenever you like.

Third, and perhaps most exciting, is your ability to use a news aggregator. Many are available online for free. A news aggregator is essentially a computer program that searches the Internet for new podcasts based on your interests, and automatically downloads them to your computer. If you like the content on our podcast page, you can set your aggregator to automatically download new podcasts as they become available on our web site. This is truly what makes podcasting unique and different from streaming media, and we are pleased that we are able to share it with you.

A vodcast is virtually the same thing as a podcast, only it includes a video clip along with audio.  Many portable MP3 players are now video-capable, and vodcasting takes advantage of this new technology.  The word "vodcast" simply means "video podcast."
