Dear Friends and Neighbors,
The 2009 Legislature completed its work
on April 26. Although we dealt with many
topics this year, the biggest issue before us was
balancing a state budget in the face of a $9 billion deficit
for 2009-11. Gov. Gregoire said the state should
balance its budget without raising taxes. I agree, and as a
member of the
Senate Ways
and Means (budget) Committee, I made that one of my top
priorities.
As leader of the Senate Republican
Caucus, I realize our citizens are struggling with
increasing costs, shrinking paychecks and retirement
accounts, and diminishing confidence in our state’s and
nation’s economy. My goal during the session was to help
Washingtonians get through this rough economic period
without having government impose even more taxes and
regulations on their backs.
